British Middle Distance Championships (UKOL)

Chinley Churn, Chapel-en-le- Frith
Hosted by Derwent Valley Orienteers
Organiser Sal Chaffey from Derwent Valley Orienteers, says:
“After many weeks of hard work and planning, DVO are looking forward to welcoming competitors to this scenic area. We know that seconds are valuable in a Middle race, so have positioned extra stiles on the moor and arranged a contactless finish! The forecast for the day is good, and the assembly field has a fantastic view of the downhill finish and last few controls. There’s lots of room for club tents, so you can enjoy the atmosphere with friends old and new.
As well as medals and trophies, all top-three finishers will receive a locally-sourced edible memento and we will be awarding Bakewell puddings as spot prizes.”
Chinley Churn will be new to many orienteers, having been mapped for the first time in 2015. The terrain is very fast and runnable rough grassland with little bracken or heather to impede progress. Areas of old quarries, with many small hills, boulders, crags and depressions provide complex and challenging navigation on steep, sometimes rocky slopes.
The eastern area comprises a terraced scarp slope with quarry workings and other rock features. The north-western area is the more gently inclined dip slope, with depressions and linear marshes. The connecting ridge rises above 400 metres, with views east towards Kinder Scout and west to Manchester.
The whole area is grazed by sheep, with virtually no trees. Typical to the area, there are many dry-stone walls, gates and stiles.
Start times are available here.
Planner: Ranald Macdonald assisted by Dave Chaffey, both Derwent Valley Orienteers (DVO).
Organiser: Sal Chaffey assisted by Viv Macdonald, both from DVO.
Controller: Chris Burden, from Airienteers
Mapper: Richard Parkin, from DVO
British Orienteering would like to take this opportunity to thank all the event officials and members of surrounding clubs for all their hard work and time they have given to putting this year’s British Sprint and British Middle Distance Championships together. Best wishes to all British Orienteering members navigating their way to the East Midlands for a great weekend of competitive orienteering. Who will be crowned 2019 British Champions?
MTB Orienteering World Cup Round 1 8-10 June 2019, Poland.
SATURDAY, 8th June Mixed Relay
SUNDAY, 9th June Sprint
MONDAY, 10th June Mass-start
In the first MTBO World Cup Sprint race of the year, Clare Dallimore rode to a strong 6th place in a highly competitive race in sunny Wroclaw Polska only 40 seconds off Silver.
Despite making an early mistake she kept her cool in the mixed urban/forest setting of the Olympic stadium in the heart of Wroclaw in southern Poland.
With the Mass Start race, there's a real chance of improving on last year's podium placing in the overall World Cup, with World Champs in Denmark in July and the final World Cup in Germany in October 2019.
Watch out too for a strong GB Women's Relay team in Denmark with the return of Emily Benham to World Champs competition.
