Resumption of orienteering: Phase 1 United Kingdom

The updated UK government guidance published on 11 May 2020 permits the resumption of outdoor sports in England where you take part alone, within a household group, or with one person from outside your household from whom you must stay two metres apart at all times.

The updated guidance from the NI Executive published on 18 May 2020 permits Groups of 4 – 6 people who do not share a household can meet outdoors maintaining social distancing.

This will allow us to resume a limited set of individual orienteering activities in these parts of the country, as set out below.

There is no change to the current position in Scotland and Wales, and so orienteering activities in these parts of the UK must remain suspended for now.

As a sport, we must work together to resume orienteering responsibly as and when the relevant government determines it is safe to do so. The Board have committed to following the respective advice of each government, and therefore there are likely to be periods when types of orienteering activities permitted varies between different parts of the UK, depending on the government guidance and regulations.

In England and the Isle of Man, we moved to Phase 1 of the resumption of orienteering with effect from 14 May 2020.

In Northern Ireland, we will move to Phase 1 with effect from 22 May 2020.

This will mean that clubs and individuals can:

  • Promote the use of Permanent Orienteering Courses (POCs)
  • Make maps with pre-marked courses available
  • Promote the use of MapRun or Routegadget and other virtual orienteering courses (VOCs),
  • Carry out mapping and planning for future events

Scotland's Route Map Out of Lockdown

Following the Scottish Government publication of Scotland’s route map from lockdown, Scottish Orienteering Assocation (SOA) and British Orienteering will consider how each phase has implications for orienteering in Scotland.

Today’s news is obviously very welcome however we would remind all members that until 28th May when we receive further guidance from the Scottish Government the current restrictions in Scotland remain in place.

We will take some time to consider the Scottish Government route map to provide orienteering in Scotland the correct guidance and outline a clear re-activation plan for the coming weeks and months ahead. While today’s statement by the First Minister gave us hope of increased outdoor activity it is imperative we realise that we have not, at this stage, been given the green light to ‘return to sport’. Both Scottish Orienteering and British Orienteering with other outdoor sports will be working closely to fully understand the route map and ensure we operate in line with the latest public health information at every stage.

British Orienteering 39th Annual General Meeting

British Orienteering  would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our 2020 Annual General Meeting which will take place on Saturday, 1st August 2020.

We note the current issues surrounding COVID-19 (coronavirus) and the rapidly developing public health guidance in the UK at the time of writing. This includes social distancing requirements, additional guidance for those over the age of 70 or with underlying medical conditions, and restrictions on public gatherings. The health and safety of our members and staff is always our utmost priority.

We have therefore decided to hold the AGM in our offices. If the public health guidance remains unchanged, we regretfully will not be able to run an AGM event as in previous years, and members will not be able to attend in person. We will, however, ensure that an appropriate videoconferencing solution is in place to enable those members who wish to take part in the AGM to do so remotely.

We will continue to monitor the situation and the latest available public health guidance and will provide updates concerning our AGM on our website at www.britishorienteering.org.uk. Members will still be able to submit questions either before or at the meeting.

All members are welcome to attend.

Directors

All applicants must be nominated by two British Orienteering members. For further information or a preliminary discussion, please contact the Chief Executive or Chair.

British Orienteering is looking for new elected directors to take office at the AGM, which will be held at the JK in April 2020. There are three places on the board up for election. These include two vacancies: one for a two-year directorship, replacing Graham Patten, who has resigned, and one for a three-year directorship, replacing Judith Holt, who will stand down having served the maximum of three consecutive terms as a director. Ruth Beale has agreed to stand for election for a further three-year term as a director, having come to the end of her first term.

This is an exciting time to become a director, with the strategic refresh offering a real chance to shape the future of orienteering in the UK. Providing strategic direction for the sport is at the heart of the role of the board of directors, alongside overseeing the operations of British Orienteering in delivering this strategy. There will also be opportunities for directors who wish to do so to take on additional responsibilities that match their interests and expertise. Board meetings take place four times per year, on a mix of weekdays and Saturdays, and currently alternate between Birmingham, Manchester and London, with further business conducted by email or teleconference between meetings.

These roles are voluntary and unpaid, although reasonable expenses (such as travel to board meetings) will be reimbursed. To function effectively, the board needs directors from across the orienteering community, and nominations for election are welcome from all adult members of British Orienteering. The board would particularly welcome nominations from groups which are currently underrepresented on the board, including women, and people from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Voting - How do I vote?

In the light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, we strongly encourage you to consider ensuring your vote is counted by submission of the proxy form online or by post further details will be distributed with the AGM papers. However, a voting on the day system will be enabled.

Members will receive an invitation to vote in advance of the British Orienteering AGM by email from Mi-Voice, an independent organisation, who are supporting British Orienteering with the process.

On or before Friday, 10th July 2020 you will soon receive your AGM email which will include the Agenda, and Voting by Proxy process from the email address: elections@mi-voice.com with instructions on how to participate. This information will also be posted on the British Orienteering website. If the email does not arrive in your inbox please ensure that you check your junk folder.

Can you help our athletes fulfil their full potential in 2020?

Senior Squad Volunteer Support Roles

British Orienteering is looking to appoint a number of volunteer support roles to work with the Senior Squad for 2020. Roles are available to support the squad at International Orienteering Federation (IOF) and other International Competitions including the Nokian Tyres World Orienteering Championships.  The primary roles are Team Manager, Technical Support/Coach and Physio.

The roles are identified to support the athletes in the lead up to and at each competition and they will work together to support the athletes to prepare effectively for competitions. Responsibilities include coordinating the logistics, providing mentoring/coaching support for athletes and to provide medical advice in line with qualifications held (physio role only).

For consistency of experience for the athletes, it is preferred if the positions can be filled by the same people across a number of competitions. However, all offers of support are very welcome and will be considered accordingly.

These roles are expected to take place during the dates indicated below.  However, communication via phone and email to British Orienteering and athletes prior and post-competition would be required when necessary.

Competition Roles

Team Manager

As Team Manager you will manage the GB team attendance at competitions aiming to provide, as far as possible, a stress-free competition experience for the team. You will have experience of managing team attendance at international competitions.

Your role will organise and coordinate the logistics for the GB team attending Senior International Competitions, including internal travel, food and training and will involve liaising with Competition Organisers. Your role as Team Manager at the competition will include the final declaration of athletes nominated for each race.

You will have knowledge and experience of International Orienteering Competition, excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.

Technical Support Volunteer/ Coach

As Technical Support Volunteer you will be able to provide coaching/mentoring support for athletes whilst at the competition, including coordinating training and supporting the athlete’s preparations for each race.  

You will have knowledge and experience of International Orienteering Competition, relevant coaching experience, excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.

Physio/Massage

As a Physio/Massage Volunteer, you will work with the Team Manager and athletes, to ensure that the athletes are prepared as far as possible, to deliver their best performances at the competition.

The role will include supporting athletes commensurate with your qualifications during their competition, communication with the athletes and support teams to ensure understanding of the athlete’s current condition.

Costs of travel from the UK to competitions, accommodation and other associated competition costs will be covered by British Orienteering.
