British Orienteering Launches Free Digital Membership to Welcome New Participants

20 February 2026

British Orienteering is pleased to announce the national rollout of its Free Digital Membership, designed to lower barriers and provide a friendly, structured entry route into orienteering through the redesigned Go Orienteering site.

The scheme follows a successful soft launch at the National Running Show, where interest from newcomers highlighted the value of a no‑cost way to explore the sport.

What it offers

Beginner guidance, local club information, nearby events and activities, Permanent and Virtual Orienteering Courses (POCs/VOCs), a refreshed personal dashboard, and regular emails with ideas and opportunities, all curated to help individuals get started. The offer deliberately excludes paid‑member benefits, ensuring existing memberships retain their value while providing a bridge for those not yet ready to join.

For clubs and volunteers, the Digital Membership supports follow‑up after events, reduces paperwork and manual processes, and makes it easier to signpost next steps. A downloadable A5 leaflet is now available in the Club Hub for use at events and community activities.

Kay Hawke, Partnerships Manager, explored the programme and practical club benefits in the Development Conference webinar, watch on demand via YouTube.
