British Orienteering Transgender Policy

5 June 2026

British Orienteering has recently published a new Transgender Policy, which sets out eligibility requirements for participation in competition categories at British Orienteering-affiliated events.

The policy follows recent legal developments and clarification relating to the application of equality legislation in sport, including the UK Supreme Court judgment concerning the definition of sex under the Equality Act 2010. British Orienteering has reviewed its approach in light of this evolving legal and regulatory landscape, alongside guidance relevant to sports governing bodies. Similar reviews and policy updates have been undertaken across many sports as organisations work to ensure their policies remain compliant with current legal requirements while supporting fair and safe participation.

The full British Orienteering policy can be viewed here and is effective immediately.

We recognise that this is a topic on which individuals may hold a range of views and experiences. We ask all members to continue to engage with one another respectfully and in a manner that reflects the values of our sport and the wider orienteering community.

As part of the implementation process, updates are currently being made to the British Orienteering database. These changes will support the administration of the policy and ensure that member records and competition entries can be managed appropriately. Further information regarding these updates, including any actions that may be required by members, will be communicated in due course.

Members with questions about the policy are encouraged to review the published guidance in the first instance or contact the British Orienteering office for further information.

British Orienteering remains committed to providing opportunities for anyone to participate in orienteering and thanks all members for their support and cooperation as these changes are implemented.
