Join the Board of British Orienteering as an Independent Non-Executive Director

15 October 2026

Help shape the future of orienteering in the UK

British Orienteering is seeking an Independent Non-Executive Director to join its Board, working alongside the Chair, Elected Non-Executive Directors and Chief Executive.

As the national governing body for orienteering in the UK, British Orienteering is committed to growing participation, strengthening clubs and creating positive experiences that enable people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy the sport.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute your expertise, experience and fresh perspectives to the leadership and governance of the sport. As an Independent Director, you will help provide strategic direction, support effective decision-making and ensure British Orienteering continues to develop as an inclusive, safe and forward-thinking organisation.

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applications from people who can bring independent judgement, constructive challenge and a collaborative approach to Board discussions. You will be able to think strategically, contribute to collective decision-making and help the organisation achieve its ambitions.

The Board would particularly welcome expressions of interest from individuals with specialist knowledge and practical experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Welfare and safeguarding
  • Safety and risk management
  • Diversity, equality and inclusion

These areas represent particular interests for the Board, but they are not essential requirements. We welcome applications from candidates with a range of backgrounds, skills and experiences who can make a positive contribution to the governance and future development of British Orienteering.

You do not need to be an orienteer to apply. We are keen to attract people who share our commitment to the sport and can bring new ideas, experience and perspectives to the Board.
