Blessed by perfect weather conditions and a energy-saving cable-car ride up to the start, the British athletes tackled physically and technically challenging courses which required them to not only navigate sections of intricate rock and contour detail, but also to then weigh up significant routechoices on imposingly steep slopes.
Finn Selmer Duguid continued his successful streak with a silver medal in M18, delivering a strong physical performance and a fast finish to secure a fantastic result. He wasn’t the only British M18 to achieve success today: Finlay MacLuckie came 18th and Oliver Duncan finished in 20th, only ten seconds apart in a tightly packed field.
Scarlett Kelly was the top performing British woman with a 22nd place in the W18 class, narrowly beating Emily Atkinson (24th) whose strong result was made all the more impressive by one of her shoes disintegrating early on in the race!
Elsewhere, James Hammond bounced back from a disappointing sprint to deliver a strong 15th place finish in M20. An Alpine long always presents a serious challenge for orienteers and all the British athletes showed real strength and determination to produce strong performances after a tiring, intense, but ultimately very successful weekend of racing!
