Annual General Meeting 2025: Summary of Proceedings

Last chance to complete the Orienteering Foundation's survey on volunteering!
Earlier this year, the Orienteering Foundation announced a survey of volunteering in orienteering to gather data and inform future actions to help recruit, train and develop our volunteers and make their jobs easier and more enjoyable. The deadline for this survey to be completed is now Monday 12 May 2025.

GB Team at the Antwerp Sprint Orienteering Meeting (ASOM)
Whilst most British orienteers were still slowly emerging from their post-JK slumber, a group of ten GB athletes headed out to Belgium to compete in the tenth annual Antwerp Sprint Orienteering Meeting (ASOM) which was held this year in Turnhout, not far from the base of this year’s European Orienteering Championships.

BOF Annual Mapping Awards 2024: Walsh Trophy Winner – Rudi Paul (STAG)
Rudi Paul created the detailed Glasgow City Centre map from scratch in early 2024, covering 3.5 km² of complex urban terrain. Used for the Glasgow City Race and STAG training, it balances legibility and precision, overcoming significant mapping challenges to produce a high-quality, versatile resource for orienteering in central Glasgow.

Graham Gristwood is awarded the Silva Trophy for his map designed for the World Orienteering Championships 2024 (Sprint and Knock-out Sprint Finals).

BOF Annual Mapping Awards 2024: Chichester Trophy Winner – Simon Errington (HH)
Simon is awarded the Chichester Trophy for the Ashridge North Map. He produced a very clear, good-looking map with excellent cartography. Path junctions were good, with a very few less-than-minimum size vegetation areas.

BOF Annual Mapping Awards 2024: Bonington Trophy Winner – Bob Beresford (TVOC)
Bob Beresford, a key figure in TVOC since 1992, has led the club’s mapping efforts with outstanding dedication. Despite recent health challenges, he continues producing and updating high-quality maps, pioneering the use of LIDAR, mentoring others, and shaping TVOC’s mapping strategy. His commitment and leadership are truly exceptional and inspirational.

Ian Cooper has dedicated nearly 50 years to orienteering, excelling in mapping, planning, controlling, and mentoring. A founder of South African orienteering and long-time SYO member, he’s created countless maps, supported juniors, and shaped major events. His passion, expertise, and tireless volunteering have profoundly impacted the sport both nationally and internationally.

Robin Strain has been a driving force behind orienteering technology in Scotland, managing SportIdent logistics, live results, and computing for major events including WOC and the Scottish 6 Days. A patient mentor and problem-solver, his dedication, innovation, and behind-the-scenes work have shaped the sport nationally for decades.

BOF Annual Awards 2024: Respect the Environment Award Winner – Southampton Orienteering Club
Southampton Orienteering Club, led by Julian as New Forest Coordinator, has set a gold standard in environmental stewardship. Working closely with Forestry England, SOC ensures all events meet strict ecological regulations in the protected New Forest. Their respectful planning safeguards habitats while enabling sustainable orienteering in this sensitive natural area.
