Development & Innovation of the Year Award

We adapt to changes in society and technology in our everyday lives and it is no different in organisations and clubs. There is evidence across the UK, especially in recent years, of groups and clubs who have evolved, and looked at delivering activities and developing orienteering in new ways which reflect and support these changes.

This award celebrates the efforts an individual, group, or club has put into delivering a programme or initiative which supports the growth of orienteering. It is more about the idea rather than the scale, so this award could be perfect for a smaller club that is forward-thinking.

Spirit of Inclusion Award (New)

This award, new to 2023, has been introduced to recognise the success of club initiatives or projects that aimed to reach currently under-represented groups in orienteering.

This award is open to any initiative/project that has ensured orienteering is a welcoming place for everyone.  Any initiative/project that helped promote inclusion and ensured people felt expected, reflected and/or respected within orienteering.

Reason for nomination - supporting comments should include how the initiative/project:

  • Promoted orienteering to a previously underserved group and ensured they felt welcome.
  • Considered a creative approach to ensure inclusion for all.
  • Embraced changes to an event or activity that helped people feel welcome.
  • Considered the needs of an individual(s) and made modifications where possible.
  • Encouraged an environment free of bias.

Continued Contribution to Orienteering Award

This award recognises and celebrates the volunteer efforts of those in our sport who contribute greatly, often behind the scenes, over an extended period of time. This would be ideal to celebrate the efforts and commitment of a long-standing club or association committee member for example.

Silva Award

In 1983 SILVA (Sweden) AB decided to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first Silva compass by establishing an annual award within each IOF member Federation. The awards were to enable Federations to honour those who have contributed in a special way to the development of orienteering. With the assistance of SILVA (UK) Ltd, this was interpreted, within the UK, as being a person or persons who have made a very significant contribution to orienteering over a period of years, with an emphasis on ‘field' activities rather than committee work. Indeed, nominees may not be active or retiring members of the British Orienteering Board, nor part- or full-time employees of the Federation.

All members can nominate someone they believe has made a significant contribution to orienteering through ‘field’ activities.
