The Community Orienteering Leader Award

The 1 day Community Orienteering Leader Award introduces candidates to the knowledge, understanding and practical ability to lead Community Orienteering club nights safely.

 

Who is the Course for?

Primarily for coaches qualified to a minimum of Level 1 standard in another sport with limited Orienteering experience.

*The course is also suitable for existing Orienteers within Community Orienteering projects to support delivery of club night activities.

 

Aims of the Course

The course reinforces leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork and introduces basic orienteering skills and techniques through interactive sessions.  This award will therefore enable candidates to be capable of demonstrating the techniques employed, and the skills to supervise a group safely within the Community Orienteering Programme according to British Orienteering guidelines.

 

What is the Community Orienteering Programme?

The Community Orienteering Programme is the delivery of weekly evening sessions which allows new and existing orienteers the chance to learn and practise Orienteering skills and activities in a friendly, welcoming and motivating environment.

 

What would I have to do as Community Orienteer Leader?

The leader is the key motivator and deliverer of activities within the Community Orienteering Programme.  This course introduces the knowledge, understanding and practical ability to lead club nights safely.  You will be able to deliver task card activities on enclosed sites such as schools or parks and following the course will be insured to deliver these activities if you are a member of British Orienteering.  Equipment can be provided by British Orienteering (Year in a Box).

First Aid Requirements for Leaders

In order to become licensed by British Orienteering, holders of the COLA must hold a first aid certificate. Here is a summary of what British Orienteering considers to be an appropriate first aid qualification. The First aid certificate must be current. Some First Aid certificates have an expiry date. In order for a First Aid certificate to be recognised by British Orienteering is must still be in date. The First aid certificate must be valid: There are a number of different First Aid certificates on the open market. British orienteering does not which one you complete as long as it covers the following topics

  • Understanding the role of the first aider.

  • Communicating effectively and managing an incident.

  • Looking after yourself and the casualty.

  • Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.

  • Administering cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) promptly and effectively.

  • Administering First Aid safely, promptly and effectively to an unconscious casualty.

  • Administering First Aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who: 1. is choking 2. is bleeding 3. is in shock.

  • Providing appropriate First Aid for minor injuries.

  • Reporting accidents in the appropriate manner.
