Young Leader Award
Could you be the future of our sport? The Young Leader Award provides tutors with the basic skills of orienteering. The aim is that these skills are then transferable to 8-18-year-olds.
Course aims
- Learning the basic skills of orienteering.
- How to deliver safe, enjoyable activities on enclosed sites.
- How to support local and school events such as the School Games, Scouts/Guides, and Cadet activities.
By the end of this course, you should feel confident to deliver a successful Young Leaders Award for your young cohort, supporting them to on their leadership journey.
The course will take approximately an hour to complete, and you will also receive the following:
- Certificate
- Quick links to supporting resources and guidance.
Who can take part?
Tutors may include:
• School staff
• Youth workers
• Outdoor Centre Staff
• Leaders from uniformed groups who have completed the British Orienteering Young Leader Tutor eLearning.
What is Delivered
The delivery consists of sessions, which can be delivered flexibly, based on needs.
Each session includes leadership activities and games that progress from the basics of Orienteering to outdoor environments. Topics include:
- Introduction to orienteering
- Understanding basic map symbols
- How to apply Orienteering Skills
- Setting up activities and exercises
- Organising a competition
- Safety awareness and event support
- Further opportunities
