Athletes were treated to a feast of technical training on Grizedale and Simpson Ground on the Saturday before putting things into practice with some faster-paced orienteering at Haverthwaite on the Sunday. Perfect preparation for the challenges that await them in domestic and international forest races later this year.

In parallel, a small group of athletes took advantage of the opportunity for some head-to-head sprint training in Kendal, Windermere and Ulverston – made all the more tricky by the fiendish deployment of artificial barriers, which meant athletes were constantly pushed to the limit, mentally and physically. Great training for WOC in Italy this summer!

Following January’s launch of an initiative to coordinate training activities for elite athletes who are not in the GB squad, around 15 athletes from outside the squad - including national team runners from Ireland, the USA and Hong Kong – also joined the weekend’s training. It was great to be able to help broaden the base of elite orienteering in the UK; more information about this initiative can be found in the recent news item.
Thank you to all the volunteer coaches and support staff who put on a great weekend of training!
