Licenced Coaches
British Orienteering trains and qualifies coaches in orienteering at Levels 1 to 4. Over 2000 coaches have been qualified since the awards began. In order to maintain a register of coaches that British Orienteering is confident are active and knowledgeable in current coaching methods a ‘License to Practice’ scheme is in place.
The term 'Licence to Practice' identifies those Orienteering Coaches who meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrated competence against the standards at the appropriate Coaching Award Level
- Signed to confirm they accept the British Orienteering Code of Conduct for Coaches

They are a member of British Orienteering to the appropriate status, that is:
- UKCC Level 1 coaches need to be at least a Local Member of British Orienteering
- UKCC Level 2 and above coaches need to be a National Member of British Orienteering
To maintain a License to Practice status, coaches will also be required to demonstrate and provide evidence that:
- They have undertaken approapriate CPD in the last three years (CPD Programme) and completed a CPD Log. (Sample shown)

They hold a current (issued within the last three years) First Aid Certificate, appropriate to their coaching level:
- UKCC Level 1 coaches must possess a current first aid certificate resulting from at least 4 hours of training with an organization which is a Health and Safety Executive approved course provider. The award of the certificate must involve an element of assessment and the training must cover basic life support and emergency aid.
- UKCC Level 2 coaches must possess a current first aid certificate resulting from at least 8 hours of training with an organization which is a Health and Safety Executive approved course provider. The award of the certificate must involve an element of assessment and the training must cover more than basic life support and emergency aid.
For those coaches with awards made before the introduction of the UKCC awards the following will apply:
- Level 1 and Level 2 coaches must possess a current first aid certificate resulting from at least 4 hours of training with an organization which is a Health and Safety Executive approved course provider. The award of the certificate must involve an element of assessment and the training must cover basic life support and emergency aid.
- Level 3 and above coaches must possess a current first aid certificate resulting from at least 16 hours of training with an organization which is a Health and Safety Executive approved course provider. The award of the certificate must involve an element of assessment and the training must cover emergency first aid in the outdoors.
Only coaches who are licensed to practice will be covered by the British Orienteering public liability insurance policy and able to register and run coaching activities.
British Orienteering are required to keep a signed copy of the code of conduct and a copy first aid certificate for individual coaches on file at the National Office. If you intend to become a licensed coach please forward these items to the British Orienteering National Office either by post to 8a Stancliffe House, Whitworth Road, Darley Dale, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 2HJ or email to the Coaching Department with scanned copies.
