Return of the 28th Peter Palmer Junior Team Relay

After a 2-year absence due to COVID, the 28th Peter Palmer Junior Team Relay and 3rd Daybreak Bowl took place in Sutton Park on 10-11 September 2022. A total of 15 teams took part, 10 in the PPJTR and five in the Daybreak Bowl.

After a 5 a side football tournament which turned into an exciting 30 a side plus final match, based on South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) vs the rest, competitors settled down for the night and re-emerged from 4am onwards to take part in the main event.

Adrian Bailey’s well-planned courses, under the watchful eye of Barry Elkington proved to be a fair challenge, with appropriate running times and only one team being disqualified for mis-punching.

It proved to be a great night for SYO, who won three out of the four trophies available.

WCOC Wildcats were in the lead for the first two legs but then a great run by Imogen Pieters put SYO Killer Bees in the driving seat and thereafter they never looked back, cruising to victory in the Peter Palmer Relays with a magnificent final leg run by Euan Tryner. Last times winners WCOC finished 2nd.

The Joan George Trophy which is for the winning team with a combined age of 90 or less was won by SYO Bumble Bees.

The Norwich Orienteering Club Anniversary Trophy small club team was won by SUFFOC.

In the Daybreak Bowl SYO Bees Knees proved they were indeed the Bees Knees, leading from the front followed by last times winners WAOC.

It was nice to see so many junior orienteers having a great time and we look forward to seeing them and many more compete in next year’s competition to be held at National Trust Stowe in Buckinghamshire.
