The Chichester Trophy Award Winner 2022: Simon Errington (Hertfordshire Orienteering Club)

British Orienteering are pleased to announce that the winner of The Chichester Trophy Award is Simon Errington from Hertfordshire Orienteering Club.

The Chichester Trophy Award is presented for the best map produced by an amateur mapper.

Simon Errington (Hertfordshire Orienteering Club) for the map of Ashridge South and East

Simon was responsible for a complete resurvey and redraw of an area that has been in use for orienteering since the 1960s. It is based on Environment Agency LIDAR data, with extensive use of the DEM analysis tools available in OCAD.

Speaking about the mapping he said: “I made eight visits to the area and covered over 120km to produce and check the map. Previous maps had been almost entirely white. The biggest challenge was trying to add the now extensive brambles in a way that still left the area usable. The map was first used for the HH Ace of Herts event on 27 February 2022”.

We are sure that everyone will join us in congratulating Simon for winning this award. You can learn more about Hertfordshire Orienteering Club on their website.
