| Description: | Part of BOK's Urban Series, held most Wednesday evenings from late April to early July. Short, Medium and Long courses available. Best 6 results on each course score for series prizes, with separate male and female competitions. Under-16s may compete alone on the Short course. On the Medium and Long courses, they must be closely accompanied (not just shadowed) by a responsible adult. At assembly will be a paid bar which will be open for us to use. Please feel free to stick around after your run to discuss route choices over a drink. The village of Pucklechurch (population approx. 3,000) sits on an elevated plateau about 8 miles to the north east of Bristol, 8 miles to the north west of Bath and just south of the Cotswolds and the nearby M4 motorway. It is surrounded almost entirely by agricultural land. The name appears as “Pulcrecerce” in the Domesday Book of 1086, and the name is believed to mean 'Pucela's church’. One of the current major features in the village is HM Prison Ashfield, which was previously known as HMP Pucklechurch for young offenders. The site of the prison was originally that of RAF Pucklechurch which opened in August 1939 as No.11 Balloon Centre as a barrage balloon depot during the Second World War. The actor, broadcaster, comedian, director, narrator and writer Stephen Fry was briefly an inmate of HMP Pucklechurch, when he spent four months on remand there when he was 17 after stealing a credit card and “embarking on a countrywide spending spree”. Modern landmarks in the village include the Moat House and the Grey House, both of which are Grade II* listed. |
