Appeal by SHUOC “Men of Steel” team against the Jury’s Decision at the British Relay Championships 2017

An appeal was made regarding the championships and the decision of the Appeal Panel can be found below:

1. The appeal concerns the disqualification of a member of SHUOC "Men of Steel" team for a missing punch on leg 2 at control 193 (number 21 on course BA)

2. The appeal panel was comprised of the following members of the Events and Competitions Committee: Mike Cope, Chris James, Chris Phillips and Ernie Williams.

3. Evidence was taken from the Event Organiser, the Event Controller, and SPORTident.
Evidence was also submitted by the team concerned. The panel also had access to the Jury’s written decision given on the day.

4. "We are of the view that the equipment was correctly prepared before the event and that Control 193 was correctly operating at the time the competitor visited the control".

"We have found no acceptable evidence, in line with the current Rules of Orienteering (Version 3.6 – Effective from 1 Dec 2016 Rules) numbered 11.1 and 11.2, that a viable punch was recorded. Therefore we uphold the Jury’s decision."

"We would remind competitors that it is their responsibility to ensure that a punch is recorded."

"We would also remind Event Juries that, in order to have the opportunity to obtain as much information as is possible that can be collated and discussed regarding the appeal, they do not have to make a decision on the day and that, on occasion, it is detrimental to do so".
