The Walsh Trophy Award Winner 2022: Simon Errington (Hertfordshire Orienteering Club)

British Orienteering are pleased to announce The Walsh Trophy Award winner as Simon Errington from Hertfordshire Orienteering Club.

This award is presented for the best urban or sprint map.

Simon Errington (Hertfordshire Orienteering Club) for the map of Welwyn Garden City

Simon originally surveyed and drew this map in early 2020 for use as part of the Welwyn Garden City Centenary celebrations. It was cancelled because of Covid and the map was eventually first used on May 8 2022. The map is based on Ordnance Survey material and Environment Agency Lidar data. The submitted map is the full mapped area, but courses on the day made use of four different maps extracted from this master.

The map was originally drawn to ISSprom 2019. At a (very) late stage it was converted to ISSprom 2019-2 and was probably one of the first British sprint or urban maps to use the black triangle symbols for tunnel entrances.

Congratulations Simon, for winning this award! You can learn more about Hertfordshire Orienteering Club on their website.
