JWOC 2023: Sprint Relay and Middle Distance Round Up

It's been a busy few days for the Junior GB Team with the Sprint Relays and Middle Distance Races taking place in Baia Mare, Romania. Here is our round up of the action so far.

Sprint Relay

Great Britain had two teams entered and were hoping for a good result following the previous days results. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, after making a strong start the teams finished 21st and 22nd in a race that once again showed lots of excitement and drama.

During the race the lead was held by several nations, but it was Hungary who took home the gold with Individual Sprint gold medallist Rita Maramarosi bringing the team home in 1st from as far down as 10th after the third leg.

Individual Middle Race

Yesterday, the Middle race took place, which saw Switzerland and Sweden winning their first medal of the Junior World Orienteering Championships winning gold in the Womens and Men’s class respectively.

For Great Britain, Jim Bailey once again was the first Britain home securing another top 20 finish in 19th place after sitting inside the top 10 for a good period of time. He was followed closely by Charlie Rennie in 25th, and in the Womens Race Rachel Brown was first home in 26th spot, with some excellent performances from the rest of the team in a field of over 150 in each class!
